Use a two-column study sheet with a 2.5-inch cue margin and a 6-inch main writing area to keep lecture material clear and easy to review. This layout supports quick scanning during revision sessions and helps separate key questions from detailed information. Set page margins to 0.5 inches on all sides to maximize writing space without crowding the page.

Choose US Letter or A4 format based on your printer settings, and keep line spacing between 0.28 and 0.32 inches for comfortable handwriting. Students who write larger should increase spacing slightly, while compact writers can reduce it to fit more content per sheet. Consistent spacing improves readability during later study sessions.

Add a summary block at the bottom covering 20–25 percent of the page height. This area should be filled within 24 hours after class, condensing the main ideas into 2–4 sentences. Regular use of this section strengthens recall and makes weekly review faster and more structured.

Divide the study page into three clear zones: a narrow cue column on the left, a wide writing field on the right, and a summary strip at the bottom. Keep the left column near 2–2.5 inches wide and allow the main area to take the remaining space. This proportion supports quick review while preserving room for detailed lecture content.

Use light gray ruling at 0.28–0.32 inch spacing to guide handwriting without overwhelming the page. Dark or heavy lines distract during revision and reduce legibility after photocopying. Set header space at the top for date, subject, and topic so each sheet can be sorted quickly inside binders.

Apply these formatting steps before printing the study sheet:

  • Page size set to US Letter or A4
  • Margins at 0.5 inches on all sides
  • Left cue column with no horizontal lines
  • Main writing area fully ruled
  • Bottom summary box covering about one fifth of page height

Fill the cue column only after the lesson ends by adding questions, keywords, or prompts tied to the right-side content. This delayed step improves recall during later review sessions and keeps the writing field focused on raw lecture material.

How to Set Up an AVID Cornell Notes Page with Proper Margins and Sections

Set page margins to 0.5 inches on all sides before creating the study sheet. This spacing prevents text loss during home printing and leaves enough white space for hole punching or binder storage. Avoid full-bleed layouts because most classroom printers cannot handle edge-to-edge output.

Draw the vertical cue column about 2 to 2.5 inches from the left edge. This narrow strip is reserved for questions and keywords added after the lesson. Keep the divider line thin but visible so the page remains readable when photocopied.

Allocate the remaining width to the main writing area, which usually measures 6 to 6.5 inches on US Letter paper. Add horizontal ruling spaced around 0.28–0.32 inches apart to support consistent handwriting size across long lectures.

Reserve a summary section at the bottom by drawing a horizontal line roughly 2 inches from the lower margin. This zone should span the full width of the sheet and remain blank until the review stage, when the student condenses the key ideas into a short paragraph.

Include a compact header line at the top with fields for subject, date, and topic. Limit this band to about 1 inch in height so it does not reduce the main writing space. Light gray rules work better than bold boxes here.

Check alignment using print preview before producing multiple copies. Confirm that the vertical divider and bottom section do not shift outside the safe printing area, especially on older inkjet devices.

Use heavier paper between 24 lb and 28 lb if the sheets will be stored long term. Thicker stock reduces ink bleed and keeps the structured layout intact after repeated handling in binders or folders.
