How to Set Up and Play with Official Game Instructions

To organize a session, place the poles in a double diamond pattern on the field, ensuring they’re equidistant from each other. Arrange the balls at the starting point, which lies a few feet behind the first pole. Make sure that players are evenly divided into teams or groups, depending on the format chosen for your match.

The objective is to navigate your ball through the set course of wickets. Players hit their ball with a mallet, aiming to pass through these wickets in a specific sequence. A player must first strike their ball toward the initial wicket and continue the course in the predetermined order to achieve success.

Players take turns. Each turn starts with a strike from where the ball rests after the previous shot. If a ball is driven through a wicket, the player is granted an extra shot, known as a “bonus stroke.” Take advantage of this bonus, as it allows for strategic positioning or an additional move to advance toward the goal.

If a player makes contact with an opponent’s ball during their turn, they are granted a “roquet.” This allows the player to place their ball next to the opponent’s ball, then strike the opponent’s ball to propel it forward while also continuing their own game. This action can create opportunities for further strategic plays.

The match progresses by alternating turns. However, should a ball miss the next target wicket, it’s considered a fault, and the turn ends. Each player must also ensure their ball goes through every wicket in the prescribed order without skipping any. Missing a wicket means the course must be completed again from the last correctly completed wicket.

To win, the player or team must complete the course in the correct sequence and reach the final target, known as the “home” wicket. The first player or team to successfully navigate through all wickets and hit the last stake with their ball claims victory.

During the game, players are allowed to apply varying degrees of force with their mallets. This level of precision is key in getting the ball through tight spots or past defensive positions. The control over how hard or soft each strike is can significantly affect gameplay outcomes.

While the game can be competitive, maintaining fairness and respecting each other’s turns is vital. In some versions, players may agree to implement additional rules, such as “timed turns” or “specific shot restrictions,” to make the gameplay more dynamic and challenging.

How to Set Up a Court for Beginners

To begin, choose a flat, level area measuring 32 by 40 feet. Use a tape measure to ensure straight edges. Mark the boundaries with cones or chalk. Avoid uneven surfaces, as they can impact the course of the ball and disrupt play.

Next, place six wickets along the perimeter. Space them equally, but make sure there is enough room between each wicket for smooth movement. The first and last wickets should be positioned near the corners of the field, while the others should form a line in the middle.

Place the two starting posts at opposite ends of the court, each about 4 feet from the boundary. These markers help players identify their starting and finishing points. Ensure that they are firmly secured, as they act as critical reference points throughout the match.

Finally, determine where the players will begin their turns. Draw lines to indicate the start positions for each side, usually at the center. This helps players orient themselves and sets clear boundaries for the match. Once everything is marked and in place, you’re ready to play.
